What if I just let the computer go?
The above photo is of a prototype pendant light I designed. The body is made of translucent paper which is glued together in a precise pattern. This pattern determines its spherical shape and the direction the light will diffuse. The pattern is also created at random using my computer.

While fixed enough to keep the expansion uniform and the paper away from the hot bulb, the pattern is still very adjustable. Given the many relationships between glue joints and the degrees of their triangles, there is still a lot of freedom to alter the scale of the light, quantity of pockets, exterior shape of the pockets, and overall quality of light.

Picket Fence adapts

The Picket Fence adapts to older homes and cleanly manages the electrical necessities of the occupants. The baseboards have a certain thickness to them, typically much thicker than an electrical cord. By sticking these pickets onto the baseboard, a space is created between the wall and the picket points. This space serves as a track for routing all of the wires cleanly around the room. They can go wherever they like and double back as much as they need to, all concealed behind a picket fence. Because of the gaps between the individual pickets, a plug can jump out wherever it is needed.

This design thus made further elements unnecessary, elements which would have obtruded the uniform language of form. Through both the possibility to change between direct and indirect illumination and the mechanical adaptability of the reflector, the intensity of lighting can again and again be comfortably varied, thereby creating different lighting effects in the room. This pendant luminaire successfully embodies an interesting symbiosis of form and function – with its design that consistently complements its functionality, it creates a new aesthetics.
